A2. In 2026, the Shady Oaks base rate is $7,500 monthly, including 24/7 CNA care, RN supervision, LPN medication administration, three meals daily, daily housekeeping, and a furnished shared room. With VA & CT aid, and $2,227 monthly Social Security, Shady Oaks base rate care becomes very accessible for veterans. For Hoyer lifts and help eating, Shady Oaks costs $11,000, which is far less than for nursing homes (over $15,000 monthly), live-in home care (about $12,000 monthly plus personal housing and food expenses), and other assisted living homes (which may require families to hire personal aides).

A3. No. Connecticut does not allow assisted livings to receive standard Medicaid or Medicare. Low-asset still-able seniors might consider Residential Care Homes. Low-asset disabled-seniors should consider Medicaid in nursing homes, but high rated homes may have multi-year wait lists. Some low-asset seniors arrive at Shady Oaks as a ‘bridge,’ join nursing home wait lists, and take Medicaid placements when they open. We partner with skilled nursing facilities to welcome seniors after Medicare rehabilitation: from The Pines, Ingraham Manor, Sheriden Woods, Village Green, Amberwoods, Apple Rehab, Cook Willow, Avon Health Center, Jerome Home, and Southington Care Center. We often accept current residents back from hospitals without requiring long nursing home rehabilitation stays: from Bristol, UCONN, Hospital of Central Connecticut, and Hospital for Special Care.

A6. No. Shady Oaks is an open, bright, and loving sanctuary. Shady Oaks cannot accept violent, disruptive, or exit-seeking residents. As a result, this means Shady Oaks is more easy going and better for everyone else. Indeed, several residents moved here from nearby corporate memory care units to escape the sometimes unsettled resident behaviors that might occur in locked facilities. We welcome many high care seniors, even with advanced dementia, strokes, aphasia, hallucinations, and end-of-life hospice care.

A7. Yes. Shady Oaks is unique for physically disabled yet clear-headed seniors. Many general care assisted livings have ratios like 1 CNA per 20 residents. They mainly do scheduled care, so they need disabled residents to hire personal aides. Or, they may require high care residents to live in memory care units, which have more staff, but memory care might not feel like a good fit. In contrast, Shady Oaks has 1 CNA per 7 residents daily, and 1 RN per 14 residents. We help our residents 24/7.

We had 150+ attendees at our 3rd annual family picnic. Shady Oaks warmly welcomes pets for visits, but not to stay. We cannot help residents who smoke. Our hairdresser, Denise, is on-site every Monday. Bristol faith volunteers from St. Gregory’s Church and St. Stanislaus Church visit weekly.
